Outreachy internship Progress: Modifying expectations

Outreachy internship Progress: Modifying expectations

Hello everyone,

As we reach the midpoint of the Outreachy internship, it's time to reflect on the progress made so far and adjust our expectations for the remainder of the project. So for the past 9 weeks I have been working on creating effective and engaging online lessons on Science.

Original Project Timeline: Let's start by revisiting the original project timeline. When I began this internship, my proposed timeline for the project included several key milestones:

  1. Implement lesson 1 for plants and agriculture.

  2. Revise the skill table of lessons 2 and 3.

  3. Assist with reviewing documents in the lesson fixing team.

  4. Translate lessons on Decimals into Pidgin language.

  5. Update lesson 1 with graphics and conduct learner feedback research.

  6. Compose scripts for lessons 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6.

  7. Implement all lessons on the Oppia website.

  8. Help with uploading edited/new svg images on the Oppia website.

Accomplishments in the First Half: In the first half of the internship, I'm pleased to report that significant progress has been made:

  • Lesson 1 for plants and agriculture has been successfully implemented, providing learners with valuable insights into the world of botany.

  • Several documents in the lesson fixing team have been reviewed, contributing to the overall quality of Oppia's learning materials.

  • Learner feedback research has been conducted for lesson 1, allowing for necessary adjustments and improvements.

  • Scripts for lessons 2 and 3 have been composed, laying the groundwork for future lessons.

  • Translation work on Decimals lessons into Pidgin language has commenced, promoting accessibility for learners in under-resourced communities.

Adjusting Expectations: However, as with any project, there were challenges and delays along the way. Some project goals took longer than anticipated, primarily due to the complexity of the tasks and the need for additional research and collaboration. Despite these challenges, I'm proud of the progress made thus far and remain committed to delivering high-quality lessons for Oppia's learners.

New Plan for the Second Half: Moving forward, I've revised my goals for the second half of the internship:

  1. Complete the translation of Decimals lessons into Pidgin language and implement them on the Oppia website.

  2. Finalize scripts for lessons 4, 5 and 6, ensuring alignment with Oppia's educational objectives.

  3. Collaborate with mentors to address any remaining feedback and make necessary adjustments to lesson content.

  4. Assist with the implementation of all lessons on the Oppia website, ensuring a seamless learning experience for users.

  5. Continue to contribute to the improvement of Oppia's learning materials through document review and feedback.

In conclusion, while the first half of the internship has presented its share of challenges, it has also been incredibly rewarding. I'm grateful for the opportunity to contribute to Oppia's mission of providing quality education to underserved communities and look forward to the journey ahead.

Thank you for joining me on this adventure, and I'm excited to share more updates with you in the coming weeks!

Warm regards,
